The famous boiled chicken of Henry IV! Originating from the South-West and formerly queen of the farmyard, the Gascon chicken does not carry much weight against hybrid breeds, which are easier to farm. Besides being a good laying hen and full-bodied, it also has a lively, alert character and can run very fast to catch its food. It does not like confinement. Its black colour, red crest and short grey-blue legs make it a very pretty young hen.
